Windows 11: An Update Blocks the Recovery Mode — Microsoft Deploys an Emergency Fix
The recovery mode of Windows 11 (WinRE) is supposed to be your last resort in case of major system issues. However, for some users, this mode, intended to “rescue” their PCs, had completely stopped working after a recent update.
Fortunately, Microsoft has already released a fix to resolve the problem.
Windows 11: A Critical Bug Prevents System Repair
The bug affected several users after the latest Windows 11 update, rendering the recovery mode inaccessible. This is particularly serious since WinRE is often the only remaining option to restore a corrupted system, resolve driver conflicts, or fix a failed update.
Without access to this mode, the only possible solution would have been a complete reinstallation of Windows from an external source, carrying all the risks of data loss that it implies.
Microsoft Responds Quickly with Update KB5070773
In a rare move, Microsoft did not wait for the next Patch Tuesday to react: the company released update KB5070773 just six days after the rollout of the faulty update.
This fix is currently being rolled out via Windows Update. If you installed a Windows update last week, it is highly recommended to install this new update as soon as possible.
This Is Not the First Time…
This is not the first instance that Windows 11 has encountered such a problem. Last June, a security update caused endless boot loops, where PCs unsuccessfully attempted to access recovery mode before continuously restarting.
Microsoft was then required to publish a similar emergency fix.
