The end of support for Windows 10 is set for October 2025. This marks the approaching conclusion, and before the final curtain falls, Microsoft is offering an optional update in August 2025, KB5063842, which upgrades build 22H2 to 19045.6282. This update represents the final stretch before the operating system is phased out.
The end of Windows 10 is near, and Windows 11 is now more popular. Millions of users are enjoying this highly regarded operating system, but the cessation of support will expose them to cybersecurity threats. You now have only a few weeks to transition to Windows 11. However, if you’re not ready to make the jump just yet, rest assured that Microsoft is offering to extend support for Windows 10 for another year at no extra cost, though certain conditions apply.
Here are the new features of one of the last updates for Windows 10
So, what does one of the final updates for Windows 10 have in store? On the correction side, several long-standing bugs are being addressed. The display of excessive characters has been fixed in Windows text fields. There are also various other fixes, including for the simplified Chinese IME and for mf.dll, which now correctly enumerates redirected webcams in Remote Desktop.
Two major new features await Windows 10 users, so it’s advisable to back up your ISO file. First, Windows Backup for Organizations is now available for everyone. This tool allows users to maintain operations during a PC replacement or migration to Windows 11. Windows settings can be backed up and restored. It is also possible to rebuild the list of Microsoft Store applications in the Start menu on devices joined to Entra. Note that this is not a system image solution or a file backup; it’s a configuration recovery mechanism managed by the IT department.
The patch notes also emphasize an important security point: historical Secure Boot certificates will start expiring in June 2026. Microsoft is publishing 2023 certificates and guidelines to update UEFI firmware. The aim is to avoid boot or maintenance issues for systems that remain operational beyond that date.
As mentioned earlier, the KB5063842 update is optional. If you wish to install it on Windows 10, which is presenting challenges for Microsoft due to the approaching end of support, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then look for optional updates. Administrators who prefer a manual deployment can download the package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
