WhatsApp secures your backups with Face ID and passkeys

WhatsApp takes a significant step towards a password-free future. The messaging application introduces a new encrypted backup method called “passkey-encrypted backups,” allowing users to protect their conversations using face recognition, fingerprint, or screen unlock code without the need to remember a complex key.

WhatsApp: Simplified Security for Your Backups

Previously, users could enable end-to-end encryption for backups since 2021. However, this required retaining a 64-character access key or setting a password linked to that key.

Now, there’s no need to memorize everything: WhatsApp leverages passkeys, a biometric authentication technology already used for password-free logins to various services.

This means you can secure or restore your backups simply by validating via Face ID, fingerprint, or your device’s PIN code.

Gradual Rollout on iOS and Android

WhatsApp states that this feature will be rolled out gradually “over the coming weeks and months.” It will be available on both iPhone and Android smartphones without any complicated setup. To start, navigate to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup.

Once activated, your backups stored on iCloud or Google Drive will enjoy the same level of protection as your encrypted chats or calls.

A Step Towards a Password-Free Future

Passkeys replace traditional credentials with a login system based on biometric or local data. Already adopted by Apple, Google, and Microsoft, they are becoming a universal standard for digital security. WhatsApp had already introduced passkey login for accounts in 2023—the extension to backups confirms the platform’s full transition to password-free security.

WhatsApp explains this choice: “We often keep years’ worth of precious memories in our WhatsApp conversations—photos, voice messages, and important chats. Protecting these, especially in case of loss or a phone change, is essential.

In summary, WhatsApp makes security easier than ever. There’s no need to remember a password; your face or fingerprint will now suffice to lock your digital memories.
