WhatsApp arrives on the Apple Watch: beta test for wrist messaging
After years of anticipation, WhatsApp is set to debut on the Apple Watch, finally delivering a complete messaging experience to iPhone users’ wrists.
WhatsApp Tests an Apple Watch App
Meta has launched a beta version of WhatsApp for Apple Watch through TestFlight on iOS. No official announcement has been made yet, but the launch indicates that a public release is imminent.
This version already allows:
- Reading WhatsApp messages directly on the watch
- Replying to messages (text or emoji)
- Reacting to messages with quick reactions
- Sending voice messages without taking out your iPhone
Until now, the Apple Watch only displayed WhatsApp notifications, with no way to interact with discussions. This new version changes everything.
A Companion App, Not Standalone
Like on Wear OS watches, the WhatsApp app for Apple Watch works as a companion app. This means it requires a connected iPhone with the WhatsApp app installed to function.
Therefore, it is not a standalone app—making calls or using WhatsApp without an iPhone nearby is not possible. However, for most users, this integration will be more than sufficient for daily use.
Current availability: Only for TestFlight beta testers. A public release is expected in the coming weeks.
Comparison with other messaging apps:
- Messages (Apple): remains the only native app offering full integration.
- Telegram: its Watch app has been discontinued.
- Messenger and Signal: no Apple Watch version.
WhatsApp fills a significant gap in the Apple ecosystem.
A “Game-Changing” Update?
For many users, this new feature makes a huge difference: “The ability to reply or send a voice message from my wrist, without pulling out my iPhone, is finally the true utility of a smartwatch.”
The ability to record and send voice messages directly from the Apple Watch has received particular praise.
This integration comes late, but better late than never: WhatsApp finally becomes useful on the Apple Watch, and Meta fills a long-standing gap in its mobile ecosystem.
If you already use WhatsApp daily, this upcoming app could very well become your favorite update of the year.
