OpenAI’s Video Generation App Sora is Now Available on Android

OpenAI continues to expand its ecosystem of creative AI-based tools. Following a successful launch on iOS in September, Sora, the video generation app, is now available on Android, through the Google Play Store.

The app is launching in several countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, according to the official announcement made on Tuesday.

What is Sora?

Sora is an application that enables users to create, share, and remix AI-generated videos.

It combines OpenAI’s video generation capabilities with a user interface reminiscent of TikTok, where users can explore an endless feed of AI-generated content, create their own clips from text or images, and star in their videos with the “cameo” feature that inserts the user’s or friends’ faces into generated videos.

Since its release on iOS, Sora has surpassed one million downloads in just five days, setting a record for a consumer AI app.

New Features in the Android Version

The Android version also includes the latest features from Sora, such as:

  • Character cameos: reusable avatars that can appear in multiple creations.
  • Remix tools for modifying and reinterpreting existing videos.
  • Improved collaborative project management, with the ability for creators to communicate directly within the app.

Controversies and Recent Adjustments

Despite its success, Sora is already at the center of controversies related to deepfakes and copyright issues. Many creators and rights holders have criticized OpenAI’s initial policy, which required artists to opt-out to prevent their works from being used in the training database.

In response to pressure, OpenAI has reversed its policy: now, rights holders can default to prohibiting the use of their content and will have greater control over how their creations are utilized.

Paving the Way for Monetization of Cameos

Another significant update: OpenAI plans to allow rights holders to charge for the use of avatars or protected characters. For instance, a studio could allow users to insert a character from a movie or series into a Sora video for a fee.

This opens the door to a new economic model for digital licensing and AI content creation.

Sora, Balancing Technological Achievement and Ethical Gray Areas

With Sora, OpenAI democratizes video creation through AI like never before—an equally powerful and controversial tool.

Amid unlimited creativity and the risks of misuse (deepfakes, image appropriation, monetization of human avatars), Sora represents the future of AI-generated video, where the line between fiction and reality becomes increasingly blurred.
