Spotify rolls out managed accounts for kids on Premium Family subscriptions

Spotify Launches Managed Accounts for Kids on Family Premium Subscriptions

Spotify aims to help parents better control what their children listen to. After several months of testing, the platform announces the official launch of “Managed Accounts” for users of the Family Premium Plan in several countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

These managed accounts allow parents to create an independent and child-friendly musical experience for children under 13 years old, directly within the main Spotify app — rather than through Spotify Kids.

Parents can:

  • Filter explicit content,
  • Block certain artists or songs,
  • Hide videos accompanying songs,
  • And disable all interactive features, such as messaging between users.

In essence, this is a “music only” version of the service, which is safer, more controlled, and free from social influence.

Spotify: Personalized Recommendations for Kids

Each managed account operates entirely independently of the main profile. This way, children can:

  • Create their own playlists,
  • Add songs to favorites,
  • And receive personalized music recommendations based solely on their listening habits.

The benefits are twofold:

  • Children enjoy an experience tailored to their tastes,
  • Parents no longer see their algorithms “polluted” by songs they don’t listen to.

Gone are the days of a “Discover Weekly” cluttered with nursery rhymes or K-pop due to a family session.

Included in the Spotify Family Premium Plan

Managed accounts are exclusively available for Family Premium subscribers, which is priced at €21.24/month (or equivalent local currency).
This plan includes up to six individual Premium accounts for members of the same household.

To create a managed account, simply:

  1. Go to the Spotify account page,
  2. Click on “Add a member,”
  3. Then select “Add a listener aged under 13 years (or equivalent local currency).”

The child will then have their own profile, with parental controls configurable at any time.

Until now, Spotify Kids was the only way to manage the listening habits of younger users, but it operated within a separate app with a very limited interface. Managed Accounts offer a smoother solution: children use the same app as adults while staying in a controlled environment.

This is a far more modern approach — and particularly more convenient for households where everyone already uses Spotify.

A Strategic Extension for Family Services

With this new feature, Spotify enhances the value of its Family offering, which has often been considered too basic compared to competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music. By integrating control and customization tools for younger users, the service becomes more comprehensive, safer, and more appealing for families.
