Sony Xperia 1 VIII confirmed with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Sony Xperia 1 VIII confirmed with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

New leaks reveal that Sony is currently developing two new Xperia devices. According to information reported by The Walkman Blog, these models will represent the next generation of the high-end Xperia 1 VIII and a new mid-range Xperia 10 VIII.

Xperia 1 VIII Confirmed with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Qualcomm has already confirmed that Sony is among its launch partners for the latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This new high-performance SoC will logically equip the upcoming Xperia 1 VIII, the successor to the Xperia 1 VII.

The initial model references — PM-152xx — correspond to this flagship, which is expected to be released in 2025. This decision confirms Sony’s intent to maintain its position in the premium segment, particularly with an emphasis on photography and image fidelity, core pillars of the Xperia lineup.

A Second Mystery Model: Likely the Xperia 10 VIII

However, the real surprise comes from six other model numbers discovered: PM-1530-BV, PM-1531-BV, PM-1532-BV, PM-1533-BV, PM-1534-BV, and PM-1555-BV. These codes appear to denote several regional variants of a new mid-range smartphone, most likely the Xperia 10 VIII.

This model will succeed the Xperia 10 VII, which featured a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, allowing Sony to continue its dual-level strategy:

  • A high-end Xperia 1 series;
  • A more affordable Xperia 10 series, focused on battery life and simplicity.

Speculation regarding a possible Xperia 5 VI seems to have been ruled out. Sony may have discontinued this series due to declining sales. The Japanese manufacturer appears to be focusing on a more streamlined range, making it clearer for consumers.

What to Expect from Sony in 2025

If this information is confirmed:

  • The Xperia 1 VIII will be the only model equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5;
  • The Xperia 10 VIII will enhance the mid-range with solid battery life and a more understated design;
  • Sony will maintain its “professional photography” approach, with sensors co-developed with the Alpha division.

Sony seems to be refocusing its mobile strategy around a clear duo: a premium Xperia for enthusiasts and an accessible model for the general public. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the Xperia 1 VIII could be the most powerful smartphone Sony has ever created, while the Xperia 10 VIII will offer a more balanced Xperia experience — proof that the company is not done making its mark in the mobile market.
