Siri finally intelligent: Google Gemini will power the next version of the assistant

Siri enfin intelligent : Google Gemini propulsera la prochaine version de l’assistant

Over a year after unveiling the iPhone 16 “Made for Apple Intelligence,” Apple is finally preparing to launch the “smart” version of Siri.

However, the surprise comes from the technology being used: the new Siri will rely on Google Gemini’s AI models, according to an exclusive report from Bloomberg.

The New Siri: Powered by Google, Designed by Apple

According to Mark Gurman, Apple has struck a deal with Google to integrate a customized version of Gemini, Google’s large language model (LLM), at the core of the future Siri. This update is expected to roll out with iOS 26.4 in the spring of 2026.

In simple terms, users will see Apple’s interface and features, but the intelligence behind the scenes will be powered by Google. “Siri won’t feel like a Google service. Apple will utilize its own servers and branding,” Gurman notes.

Why Did Apple Choose Google (Instead of Anthropic)?

Apple reportedly considered several partners, including Anthropic (Claude), known for its impressive conversational AI performance. However, despite superior technical results, Google’s financial terms were more favorable, leading Apple to partner with the Mountain View company.

The partnership remains discreet: neither Apple nor Google is expected to comment publicly on it.

An AI “Made in Apple” But Hosted on Its Own Servers

Apple wants to reassure its users:

  • The Gemini models will be fully hosted on Apple’s private servers,
  • Personal data will never leave Apple’s infrastructure,
  • The assistant will combine Gemini’s cloud capabilities with in-house Foundation Models running directly on the iPhone for local tasks.

This approach is quite similar to what Samsung has done with Galaxy AI, which is largely powered by Gemini but branded as Samsung.

Launch Expected in 2026

If everything goes as planned, Apple should deploy the “new Siri” with iOS 26.4, approximately two years after announcing “Apple Intelligence” at WWDC 2024. While this timing may seem late, it may not be too late for Apple, as it hopes to catch up with Samsung and Google.

The “Siri 2.0” will utilize Gemini to understand complex queries and rephrase them contextually, interact between apps (e.g., “Summarize my emails and add important dates to my calendar”), perform enriched web searches via AI, and provide more natural, coherent responses.

Apple Intelligence will also add writing, summarization, and image generation tools directly integrated into iOS and macOS.

Too Late to Captivate?

Some observers argue that Apple is entering the AI race too late, two years after the initial releases of Gemini and ChatGPT on smartphones. However, others believe that users care less about the technology in use and simply want a streamlined, reliable, and private AI.

Apple is not yet creating its own end-to-end “giant” AI model but is taking a pragmatic approach: leveraging Google’s technology while maintaining complete control over the user experience and privacy. If this integration is successful, Siri could finally become the intelligent assistant that Apple has promised for years—and Apple Intelligence could truly compete with Google and Samsung’s AI.

By 2026, Siri may finally live up to its name of “intelligent” assistant—with a little help from Gemini.
