Signal launches secure backups on iOS: free or premium storage, everything you need to know

Signal strengthens its position as an ultra-secure messaging app by introducing an eagerly awaited feature on iOS: end-to-end encrypted backups.

This crucial addition helps prevent the loss of chat history if your phone is broken or misplaced.

A Secure, Managed, and Always Private Backup

Similar to its Android counterpart launched in September, iOS backups are encrypted directly on your device and secured with a 64-character recovery key.

Signal emphasizes a critical point: if you lose this key, no one — not even Signal itself — can restore your backup. This radical choice aligns with their core principles.

Two Options: Free or Premium

Signal offers two backup plans:

Free Version

  • Up to 100 MB of text messages
  • And the last 45 days of photos, videos, GIFs, and files

This option is adequate for casual users or those seeking minimal security.

Premium Version — $1.99/month

  • Unlimited backup of all text messages
  • Up to 100 GB of media stored beyond the last 45 days

An accessible subscription targeting heavy users and those wanting to archive their digital memories without compromise.

How to Activate Secure Backups?

In just a few steps:

  1. Open Settings > Backups
  2. Tap Setup > Enable Backups
  3. Carefully note and store your recovery key
  4. Select either the free or premium option
  5. The app will immediately start backing up your data

Simple, yet uncompromising on security.

Coming Soon: Cross-Platform Transfers and Desktop Backups

Signal confirms that it will not stop here. Encrypted backups will also be available on Signal Desktop, and eventually, the service will allow users to transfer their encrypted history between Android, iOS, and desktop platforms.

This represents a significant step toward a unified ecosystem, without sacrificing privacy.
