Microsoft Edge officially launches its ‘Copilot Mode’, an AI-powered browser
Microsoft has entered the realm of intelligent browsers with the official launch of ‘Copilot Mode’ in Edge. First announced in July, this new feature turns Copilot into a true gateway to the web: each time a new tab is opened, a chat window appears where you can ask questions, perform searches, or enter URLs directly.
The Copilot Assistant Becomes the Core of Edge
Copilot Mode enhances the integration of Microsoft’s AI assistant within Edge. It combines AI-generated responses, search results, and web navigation into a single interface.
The assistant can even analyze all the open pages in your tabs: you can ask it to summarize your research or compare products displayed on different sites, all without switching tabs.
New Features Preview: Copilot Actions and Journeys
Copilot Mode is now available to everyone, along with some new features in limited preview:
- Copilot Actions: an “agentic” feature that can perform tasks on your behalf, such as unsubscribing from promotional emails or making restaurant reservations.
- Journeys: an AI system that organizes your browsing history by themes and suggests new searches based on your habits.
Copilot can also use your browsing history (with your permission) to provide more relevant answers.
A Promising Assistant, Yet to Be Perfected
Like other recent AI browsers, Copilot’s “agentic” capabilities are still limited. Before any action, Microsoft displays a warning indicating that the feature is “intended for research and evaluation” and “may make mistakes”.
Despite these shortcomings, Copilot demonstrates real potential for practical assistance, particularly in managing online tasks.
How to Activate It?
To try Copilot Mode, simply:
- Download or update Microsoft Edge,
- Activate Copilot mode on Microsoft’s official site,
- (Optional) If you’re based in the United States, activate Copilot Actions and Journeys for early access.
With Copilot Mode, Microsoft aims to turn Edge into more than just a browser: a smart companion capable of understanding your searches, organizing your sessions, and acting on your behalf.
It’s still imperfect, but it marks another step towards the fusion of web browsers and intelligent personal assistants.
