Microsoft 365 Copilot: A New App Installed Automatically Starting October 2025
Starting in October 2025, Microsoft plans to automatically install a new application called Microsoft 365 Copilot on computers that already have the desktop applications of the Microsoft 365 suite (such as Word, Excel, and others).
The aim of this application is to serve as a central hub for all Copilot AI features within the 365 ecosystem. It will assist in locating files related to a project, automating repetitive tasks, and providing access to all Copilot tools integrated into Office applications.
In practical terms, this application does not introduce new features: Copilot is already built into Word, Excel, and Outlook. The distinction here is that it aims to unify the AI experience in a single dedicated space.
However, the concern is that Microsoft has opted for automatic installation. The company has not yet specified whether individual users will have the option to uninstall it.
Corporate customers, on the other hand, will have the ability to block this installation through the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Microsoft 365 Copilot: An Icon… Copilot
Another confusing aspect is that the icon for this new app will be identical to that of the standard Copilot (the general AI assistant of Windows). Users may easily confuse the two applications, which could lead to some frustrations.
There is, however, a notable exception: users in the European Economic Area (EEA). Thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which prohibits tech giants from imposing software without consent, Microsoft will not be able to install this application automatically in Europe.
If you haven’t seen it appear on your PC yet, it’s probably just a matter of time… unless you’re in Europe.
