Foldable iPhone: Apple begins stockpiling components for a late 2026 launch

After years of rumors and prototypes behind the scenes, Apple seems to be moving forward with its first foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in late 2026.

A new report from Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo claims that the Cupertino-based company is currently building up stocks of key components, indicating that the project is now in the pre-production phase.

Apple stocks components for its foldable iPhone

According to this leak, Apple has begun accumulating essential parts needed for the production of its upcoming foldable iPhone. The leaker does not specify which components exactly, but they likely include foldable OLED displays, a titanium chassis, and specially designed mechanical hinges that can withstand thousands of folds.

This kind of step typically precedes mass production: Apple secures parts that have long manufacturing times or high failure rates to mitigate the risk of delays during launch.

Launch targeted for late 2026

Based on the latest information, the foldable iPhone is expected to be part of the iPhone 18 series and could be unveiled in September 2026 during Apple’s traditional event.

The model is likely to adopt a “book” format, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, rather than a flip design with:

  • External display: 5.5 inches, usable like a standard iPhone.
  • Internal foldable display: 7.8 inches, resembling a small iPad mini when opened.

A design without a visible crease?

One of the most promising aspects is the elimination of the visible crease on the screen — that notorious dip in the center of foldable displays. According to several sources from Apple’s supply chain, the company has developed technology for a display without a perceivable crease, a first in the world of foldable smartphones.

A premium and ultra-thin design

Analyst Jeff Pu mentions a hybrid titanium/aluminum chassis, while Ming-Chi Kuo refers to the use of Liquidmetal — a shape-memory, highly durable material — for the hinge. If rumors about a thickness of 4.5 mm prove accurate, it would be the thinnest foldable smartphone on the market, surpassing models from Oppo or Honor.

Many iPhone users are waiting for an Apple foldable device before upgrading their phones. The prospect of a larger screen without sacrificing portability is appealing, especially if the brand successfully addresses the shortcomings of current models (visible crease, fragility, excessive prices).

After years of caution, Apple seems ready to enter the foldable smartphone era. If the company can balance aesthetics, durability, and technical innovation, the first iPhone Fold could redefine the premium segment — making 2026 the year of Apple’s foldable.

In short: if you’ve been waiting for the “right moment” to change your iPhone… the foldable could very well be it.
