iPad mini OLED: Apple prepares a more water-resistant design for 2026
A new report from Bloomberg reveals that Apple is developing an entirely new design for the upcoming iPad mini, featuring a key enhancement: improved water resistance.
This future model, expected in 2026, will also signal a shift to an OLED screen, providing richer colors and striking contrast.
iPad mini 2026: A more splash-resistant design
According to the information, Apple is working on a reimagined chassis that is partially waterproof, drawing inspiration from the iPhone. The goal is to make the small iPad safer to use in humid environments—whether in the kitchen, by the pool, or even in the rain.
One of the main innovations involves the audio system, which will adopt vibration-based technology instead of perforated speaker grills. This means no more holes in the casing, resulting in fewer entry points for water without compromising sound quality.
Unlike the iPhone, which relies on seals and adhesives for protection, this completely rethought approach may also simplify repairs.
The iPad mini finally goes OLED
In addition to enhanced water resistance, Apple is preparing the first iPad mini equipped with an OLED display—an advancement already seen in the iPad Pro. OLED promises more precise brightness, deeper blacks, and better energy efficiency while maintaining the portability of the mini format.
According to leaks, the iPad mini will be the first in the “mainstream” lineup to receive this upgrade, followed by the iPad Air (expected in 2027) and the MacBook Air (slated for around 2028).
A price increase, but a genuine upgrade
This new design will come at a cost: the future iPad mini could see its starting price rise by around $100, increasing from $499 to $599. This price hike is justified by the transition to OLED and the new water-resistant structure, but it will place the device in more direct competition with premium Android tablets from Samsung, Lenovo, and OnePlus, which are often priced below $500.
Apple is finally addressing two of the iPad mini’s biggest shortcomings: its fragility and aging LCD screen. If battery life and lightness remain intact, this model could become the ideal companion for creatives and travelers—more durable, more immersive, and certainly a bit more reassuring in the rain.
