Huawei Pura 90 Ultra: the flagship will feature a dual 200-megapixel sensor (main and periscope)
The rumors surrounding Huawei’s upcoming photography flagship, the Pura 90 Ultra, are intensifying. According to several Chinese sources, including well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, the future flagship is set to be the world’s first smartphone to feature a dual 200-megapixel sensor.
This technological marvel could redefine the standards of mobile photography.
Pura 90 Ultra: A Duo of 200 Megapixels for Extreme Precision
Leaks suggest that Huawei is developing a combination of a 200-megapixel main sensor and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens for the Pura 90 Ultra, both equipped with larger-than-average sensor bases.
This configuration would enable the capture of ultra-precise details with unparalleled dynamic range and clarity on a smartphone.
If confirmed, the Pura 90 Ultra would succeed the Pura 80 Ultra, which has been praised for its impressive photo performance and 1-inch XMAGE sensor. Huawei aims to achieve a significant technological leap while reinforcing its reputation in mobile photography.
An Ambitious Bet… But Not Necessarily a Guarantee of Success
However, it is important to note that more megapixels do not automatically translate into better photos. The final quality will depend as much on image processing as on the hardware.
Samsung, with its ISOCELL HP2 and HP3 sensors integrated into the Galaxy S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra, has demonstrated that a good balance between optics and algorithms is key to success.
Huawei Ahead of the Chinese Competition
Huawei is not alone in this arena. Honor was also working on a dual 200-megapixel sensor for its Magic 8 Pro but ultimately opted for a 50-megapixel sensor at launch.
The Mate 80 Pro models have also been mentioned, but the Mate range typically focuses on power and display, leaving the photography aspect to the Pura segment.
Leaks indicate that both the Pura 90 Pro+ and Ultra are currently testing this dual sensor configuration. If confirmed, Huawei would join an extremely exclusive club alongside Samsung, the pioneer of 200-megapixel sensors.
A Launch Expected in 2026?
The Huawei Pura 90 Ultra is anticipated for next year, with a full focus on photography and advanced imaging technologies. Some sources even mention a new 1/1.28-inch main sensor, paired with next-generation XMAGE algorithms.
If Huawei can bring this rumor to fruition, the Pura 90 Ultra could set a new benchmark in mobile photography, capable of competing with — or even surpassing — the best Galaxy Ultras in terms of precision and rendering.
