Huawei prepares the Mate 70 Air: an ultra-thin smartphone joins the Mate series

Huawei unveils Mate 70 Air: an ultra-slim smartphone joins the Mate series

As ultra-slim models like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and Apple’s iPhone Air have reportedly faced disappointing sales, several Chinese brands are now embracing the “Air” design.

Following the Nubia Air (6.7 mm thick) and the upcoming Moto X70 Air (5.99 mm), Huawei is set to launch its own ultra-slim model: the Mate 70 Air.

According to this leak, the Mate 70 Air will feature a large 6.9-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels.

It will be available in two configurations:

  • 12 GB of RAM + 256 GB of storage,
  • 12 GB of RAM + 512 GB of storage.

In terms of colors, three finishes are mentioned: Golden Black, Feather White, and Silver Brocade, a silver hue with golden reflections.

HarmonyOS 5.0, no 5G yet

The listing indicates that the Mate 70 Air will run on HarmonyOS 5.0, while HarmonyOS 6.0 is set to be officially unveiled on October 22 during a major Huawei event. One intriguing detail: its model number ends in “AL” rather than “AN,” a distinction that might indicate the absence of 5G connectivity.

Currently, there is no information regarding the thickness, processor, or camera module of the device, but the “Air” designation suggests a particularly slim and lightweight chassis, similar to other models in the same category.

Launch expected in November, alongside the Mate 80

The Huawei Mate 70 Air is expected to be unveiled in early November, alongside the new Mate 80 series, which will include the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro+, and Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design.

Huawei is also preparing the Mate X7, a foldable smartphone anticipated around the same time.

With the Mate 70 Air, Huawei aims to extend the life of the Mate 70 series while responding to the trend of ultra-slim “Air” smartphones, now adopted by several Chinese brands. It remains to be seen whether the company will successfully balance extreme design with endurance, a challenge that Samsung and Apple models have yet to master.
