Huawei Mate 80: First Images, Specifications, and New Features Revealed
The next generation of Huawei’s flagship smartphones is shaping up. The Huawei Mate 80 series has gained attention thanks to recent leaks on Weibo, which have unveiled the first look at the design of the phone’s back.
According to these images, the Chinese brand won’t completely overhaul its visual identity but will introduce several notable evolutions, particularly with the circular camera module and the materials used in its construction.
Huawei Mate 80: A Signature Circular Design, Reimagined
The published pictures showcase a circular camera module, a distinctive feature of the Mate range, but with a new triangular layout of the sensors. There are three main cameras visible, along with cutouts for the LED flash, laser sensors, and other modules likely devoted to autofocus and depth measurement.
This arrangement marks a slight variation from the Mate 70 series, which maintained the same circular format but with a more classic sensor layout.
Expected Models: Four Variants on the Agenda
Huawei is expected to introduce no less than four models in this series: the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro+, and the luxurious Mate 80 RS. The Mate 80 RS is anticipated to embody Huawei’s top-tier craftsmanship, featuring premium materials and specifications that align with the ultra-premium segment.
Kirin 9030 and 9020 Chips, All 5G Compatible
Under the hood, the Chinese firm is set to rely on its own next-generation Kirin processors.
- The Mate 80 Pro, Pro+, and RS are expected to be equipped with the Kirin 9030,
- while the standard Mate 80 will feature a slightly less powerful Kirin 9020.
Charging differences are also expected:
- 100 W wired for the high-end models,
- 66 W for the standard version.
Naturally, the entire range will be 5G compatible, confirming the resurgence of Huawei’s in-house modems.
Next-Generation Camera Sensors
Camera capabilities are set to be ambitious:
- The base Mate 80 will sport a 50-megapixel main sensor (1/1.5 inch),
- The Mate 80 Pro will upgrade to a larger 1/1.3 inch sensor,
- While the Mate 80 Pro+ and Mate 80 RS will introduce the brand new Huawei SmartSens 590 sensor — still at 50 megapixels, but with a 1/1.3 inch format and improved light management.
This sensor is expected to offer excellent low-light performance, bolstering Huawei’s already strong photographic positioning.
A Dual-Layer OLED Screen and Premium Materials
The Mate 80 RS will stand out with a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display, a technology designed to enhance brightness and durability while reducing energy consumption.
Additionally, Huawei is said to be experimenting with new materials, such as a titanium alloy chassis and premium-feel ceramic glass.
On the software side, the entire range will run on HarmonyOS NEXT, the unified version of Huawei’s operating system, which is entirely independent of Android.
Expected Launch Date
According to the latest leaks, the Huawei Mate 80 series is set to be officially announced in November 2025. It will succeed the Mate 70, launched at the end of 2024, and will represent Huawei’s latest technological showcase as it seeks to make a strong comeback in the high-end market.
A Mate 80 That Promises Power and Prestige
With its signature circular design, new SmartSens camera sensors, and Kirin 9030 chips, the Huawei Mate 80 Ultra is poised to be one of the most advanced smartphones of 2025. With refined materials and an increasingly mature HarmonyOS NEXT, Huawei appears determined to reclaim its place at the top of the premium market, competing against rivals like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor.
Stay tuned for November to see if the Mate 80 lives up to the hype.
