Google celebrates Day of the Dead with a paper-cut Doodle

This Saturday, November 1st, Google pays tribute to one of Mexico’s most iconic traditions: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Through a colorful and symbolic Doodle, the search engine honors this celebration that is both spiritual and festive, deeply rooted in Mexican culture.

Day of the Dead 2025: A Garland of Symbols and Memories

Today’s Doodle features a garland of papel picado, the colorful, intricately cut paper that is typical of Mexican celebrations. Each motif—candle, skull, flower—evokes light, memory, and the joy of temporarily reuniting with those who are no longer with us.

These airborne decorations remind us that Día de los Muertos is ultimately a celebration of life through remembrance.

An Ancient Festival, Blending Indigenous Traditions and Spanish Influences

The Day of the Dead has its roots in the indigenous cultures of Central America, where it was believed that the souls of the deceased would visit the living at certain times of the year. With the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the 16th century, this belief merged with Catholic traditions, giving birth to the festival we know today.

Every year, Mexican families set up domestic altars (ofrendas) adorned with photos, candles, marigold flowers (the famous cempasúchil), and personal items. These altars are offerings intended to guide the souls back home.

A Joyful Celebration of Memory

Contrary to what its name might suggest, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is not a day of sorrow. It is a joyful, colorful festival full of symbols, where streets are decorated, families gather in cemeteries, and traditional sweet bread known as pan de muerto is enjoyed.

Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, the Day of the Dead is now celebrated well beyond Mexico’s borders. With this vibrant Doodle, Google reminds the world that remembering our loved ones is also about continuing to celebrate life.
