Gemini Deep Research can read your Gmail emails and Drive files

Google takes a significant step forward in the evolution of its intelligent assistant. The company has announced a major update to Gemini Deep Research, its “agentic” AI feature designed to produce comprehensive research reports rather than simple quick answers.

Now, Gemini can access your data from Gmail, Drive, and Google Chat to provide more personalized and contextual analyses — a feature that Google describes as one of the most requested by Workspace users.

Gemini Deep Research: Smarter and More Contextual Research

Unlike traditional conversational modes, Deep Research operates as an autonomous research assistant. It establishes a multi-step research plan, conducts a series of web searches, and then synthesizes the results into a structured report.

Once the report is generated, you can ask Gemini to dig deeper or add information, export the document to Google Docs, or even turn it into an AI-generated audio podcast.

Thanks to the new integration, Gemini can now cross-reference web results with your own data stored within the Google ecosystem.

For example, you might initiate a market analysis by asking Gemini to review your brainstorming documents, email exchanges, and project plans, or compile a competitive report by merging public data with your internal files and spreadsheets.

How Does It Work?

When you select “Deep Research” in the Gemini input bar, four data sources are offered:

• Traditional Google Search
• Gmail
• Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF)
• Google Chat

You can choose which sources to enable. Gemini will then analyze these sources to generate a comprehensive and contextual report. Google emphasizes that users retain full control over shared data to preserve privacy.

Availability

Currently, this new version of Gemini Deep Research is available only on desktop, but Google plans to launch it on mobile in the coming days.
