Figma extends MCP to Make: AI can now read and recreate your apps

Figma has announced a significant update that further bridges the gap between design and artificial intelligence. Its Model Context Protocol (MCP) technology—which allows AI models to interact directly with its tools—now extends to Figma Make, a prototyping and prompt-based application generation solution.

MCP + Figma Make: A Bridge Between AI and Code

Until now, AI had viewed Figma prototypes as mere rendered images, lacking access to their internal logic. With the new MCP server for Make, the entire code architecture is now accessible.

Through a Make file, AI models can see the underlying code instead of a static image. The MCP server indexes this code and allows partner platforms to request exactly what is needed,” explains Kris Rasmussen, Chief Technology Officer of Figma.

In practical terms, AI and development agents can accurately reproduce an application designed in Figma Make without having to guess from visual snapshots.

Expanded Access Across Platforms

The Figma Make MCP server is operational today with:

  • Anthropic
  • Cursor
  • Windsurf
  • Visual Studio Code

And this is just the beginning. Figma has confirmed that more third-party MCP servers will be able to connect to Make in the coming months.

Another major update is that access is no longer limited to desktop. Now, AI agents, browsers, and cloud IDEs can utilize MCP remotely, opening up opportunities for developers who did not have access to the desktop version.

Upcoming Features in Figma

In addition to the MCP expansion, Figma is preparing new features that are expected to appeal to designers and developers:

  • Design Snapshot: a tool that converts snapshots from Make into editable layers in Figma Design (launching this week).
  • Prompt-based Editing: currently in testing, this feature will allow users to modify designs via AI instructions directly on the Figma Design canvas without leaving the interface.

Figma Aims to Become the AI Hub for Creation

With this update, Figma takes a strategic step towards making its tools not just collaborative design platforms but also native environments for AI and development agents.

The combination of MCP and Make could transform how applications are designed, prototyped, and generated by streamlining the transition from visual creation to operational code.
