The Patch Tuesday update KB5066835 for Windows 11 25H2 is causing issues. This update has been available since October 14, 2025, and some users are experiencing problems with their USB keyboards and mice.
Specifically, the issue occurs in the Windows 11 recovery environment. This is unfortunate for the operating system as it prepares its own version of Quick Look. The bug affects WinRE, the Windows Recovery Environment; when the update is installed, USB devices like keyboards and mice become unresponsive in this system repair space.
Keyboards and mice do not respond in WinRE after this Windows 11 25H2 update
Microsoft explains: “After installing the security update released on October 14, 2025, KB5066835, USB devices such as keyboards and mice do not work in the WinRE recovery environment. This issue prevents navigation among the recovery options in WinRE. Note that the USB keyboard and mouse continue to function normally in Windows.”
Unfortunately, this bug hinders the use of very important features of WinRE. The fact that keyboards and mice are non-functional in this environment is a real nightmare for users of Windows 11 25H2, which is now in its final version.
Microsoft is working on a fix for this bug while continuing to investigate the source of the problem. We now await the release of this patch. The situation is somewhat ironic as the Redmond company is trying to phase out keyboards and mice in favor of voice commands via AI.
In short, this adds yet another problem for an operating system that, in the eyes of its users, is considered inferior to Windows 10, which makes them think about backing up the ISO file. Of course, all operating systems are affected by bugs. However, in this case, Microsoft is under intense scrutiny.
