Google Assistant set to disappear: Google finally sets an official date, and it’s close
Google has officially announced when Google Assistant will cease to operate, marking the transition to Gemini: Google Assistant will be discontinued in March 2026.
After this date, Gemini will become the sole assistant available on Android phones, Wear OS, Android Auto, and other Google products.
Gemini is gradually replacing Google Assistant
Launched in 2016, Google Assistant has long been central to the Android ecosystem: smartphones, smartwatches, speakers, cars… A simple “Hey Google” was enough to manage basic tasks.
However, the assistant is now showing its limitations: rigid commands, limited understanding, and unnatural interactions. Meanwhile, generative AI-based assistants — such as ChatGPT, Copilot, or soon Siri (with Apple Intelligence) — offer much richer and more contextual exchanges.
Gemini, introduced at the end of 2023 and integrated widely since, has become Google’s top priority. It is already the default assistant on Pixel 10 devices.
Google Assistant is disappearing in March 2026
The confirmation comes from an Android Auto support page: ” Google Assistant will remain available until March 2026. Gemini will understand the same commands and allow you to communicate in natural language.”
This means:
- Google Assistant will still be usable for another year and a half
- After March 2026, only Gemini will respond to vocal commands
- Assistant features will continue to be gradually removed
The end of Google Assistant is thus initiated “brick by brick”.
Signs that Google was already preparing for the end of Google Assistant
Since early 2024:
- Several Assistant voice commands have been removed (camera control, ambient display, etc.)
- Gemini has replaced Google Assistant on Android
- Smart speakers and displays are receiving Gemini features
- Google has stopped adding new capabilities to Assistant
Google is migrating all functions to Gemini, clearly indicating a programmed end.
Gemini: More powerful but not yet perfect
Gemini excels in planning (travel, complex tasks), summarization, analysis, research, and natural language interactions.
For example, on the Pixel 10, asking Gemini to “Plan me a trip” generates a real personalized itinerary, something Google Assistant was never able to do.
However, there are issues
Many users report bugs on Google Home, simple commands failing (“turn on the light”), as well as slowness or misunderstandings. Gemini is not yet as reliable for basic smart home tasks. Some users already miss the stability of Google Assistant.
Should we mourn Google Assistant?
- Yes, if you prefer a simple, reliable assistant
- No, if you want a truly intelligent assistant that thinks
- Maybe, as Gemini is not yet 100% mature
A chapter comes to a close
In March 2026, Google Assistant will bid farewell after nearly 10 years. Gemini will fully take over, offering a richer, more conversational experience — and above all, completely embedded in AI.
The future of Google assistants will therefore be 100% Gemini.
