iPhone 17e: the ‘e’ model drops the notch for Dynamic Island

Apple is apparently not done with the iPhone 17 lineup. According to a new rumor, an additional model is set to join the current range — and it promises a significant camera enhancement.

A New iPhone 17e in the Works

According to analyst Jeff Pu, as reported by 9to5Mac, Apple is expected to launch a new ‘e’ model next year: the iPhone 17e, which will succeed the iPhone 16e and replace the iPhone SE lineup.

The standout feature is that the iPhone 17e will also include the 18-megapixel Center Stage camera, a feature that debuted this year with the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and 17 Air.

This front-facing camera can:

  • Automatically crop group selfies,
  • Track the subject if they move,
  • Function in FaceTime and third-party video conferencing apps.

In short, there’s no need to pivot your phone or stretch your arm to fit everyone in the frame.

What to Expect from the iPhone 17e (Rumors)

According to Pu and other recent leaks, the iPhone 17e may feature:

  • An 18-megapixel front camera with Center Stage, similar to the rest of the iPhone 17 line.
  • An A19 chipset: This would significantly narrow the performance gap between entry-level models and Pro models.
  • A true design update: For the first time, an ‘e’ model would drop the notch in favor of the Dynamic Island.
  • New connectivity: The Apple C1 modem and the N1 wireless chip, expected to enhance energy efficiency and peer-to-peer transfers.
  • Main screen and camera: A 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate, a 48-megapixel rear sensor, and an overall refreshed design.

The iPhone 17e Could Become an Annual Release

The report also suggests that Apple wants to make the ‘e’ model an annual lineup, more frequent and consistent than the iPhone SE family. Its launch is slated for spring 2026, similar to the recently released 16e.

Other Products Expected for 2026

Jeff Pu also mentions two entry-level devices:

  • A new “affordable” MacBook: 13 inches, A18 Pro chip, available in multiple colors, expected price: $699 to $899. There may be some hardware compromises to hit this price point.
  • A 12th-generation iPad: Similar design to the current model, featuring the A18 chip, compatible with Apple Intelligence (for the first time in a base iPad).
