OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teachers: a secure and free space for educators until 2027

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT for Teachers, a new workspace designed especially for educators and teaching teams.

The offering includes a secure environment, collaborative tools, seamless integration with educational platforms… and a clear vision: to make AI a lasting ally in classroom preparation.

ChatGPT for Teachers: A space designed for real-world applications

Teachers are already among the most active users of ChatGPT. Many utilize it to prepare lessons, create materials, or adapt their activities. ChatGPT for Teachers formalizes these uses within a secure framework, meeting school requirements, and is driven by the educators themselves.

This environment allows teachers to work with their own documents, manage sensitive student data, and adhere to district privacy policies.

Security tailored to the educational sector

OpenAI emphasizes a crucial promise: none of the content shared in ChatGPT for Teachers will be used to train models, by default. The service meets compliance requirements—including those related to FERPA—and applies specific protections for all school or student content.

Every teacher can define:

  • their school level,
  • their teaching progress,
  • their curricular references,
  • their preferred response style.

ChatGPT then customizes its suggestions based on the classroom context, whether it’s a six-week unit plan, example exercises, or ISTE standards to include.

Integrated with tools teachers already use

ChatGPT for Teachers works directly with Google Drive, Microsoft 365, and Canva (for presentations and visual materials). This allows teachers to import their documents, create activities, and generate resources without changing their habits.

Below the input area, the interface offers ideas, prompts, and examples from other educators. This demonstrates how AI can be effectively integrated into classroom settings, from elementary to high school.

Collaborative work at the institutional level

Schools and districts can group their teachers into a shared workspace to:

  • create joint projects,
  • develop specialized educational GPTs,
  • share lesson plans or assessments.

Administrators have access to advanced tools: verified domains, SAML SSO, role management, and access governance… all essential components for institutional deployment.

Massive adoption in pilot districts

OpenAI is collaborating with a first cohort of nearly 150,000 teachers and staff from major U.S. districts — including Houston, Dallas, Fairfax County, KIPP, Lynwood, Fulton County, etc. The Delaware Department of Education is also participating in the initiative, paving the way for statewide adoption.

To support educational institutions, OpenAI is releasing an AI Literacy Blueprint, a guide for educational decision-makers. This initiative is part of an international effort, alongside the American Federation of Teachers and ministries of education in Estonia, Greece, and elsewhere.

Availability: Free until 2027

ChatGPT for Teachers is accessible to K–12 educators and staff in the U.S., after verification through SheerID. The service will remain free until June 2027, and any future pricing changes will be announced in advance to allow schools to prepare.
