ChatGPT Atlas adds vertical tabs in the style of the Arc browser

ChatGPT Atlas introduces vertical tabs similar to the Arc browser

Just launched on macOS, ChatGPT Atlas is already evolving. OpenAI has unveiled a new vertical tab interface that closely aligns its intelligent browser with the experience offered by Arc — one of the most ambitious next-generation browsers.

This update aims to streamline navigation and reduce visual clutter.

ChatGPT Atlas: Vertical Tabs Inspired by Arc with a Flexible Sidebar

The most visible new feature is the introduction of vertical tabs, now accessible from a sidebar on the left. No more stacking tabs at the top: simply right-click in the address bar → Tab Style → Vertical Tabs.

Similar to Arc:

  • The sidebar is resizable,
  • Tabs can be reordered,
  • The overall organization becomes more visual and controllable.

The address bar remains at the top, indicating that Atlas’s interface hasn’t yet achieved the full modularity of The Browser Company’s browser — but the direction is clearly set.

Google Can Now Be Your Default Search Engine

A recurring request: ChatGPT Atlas now allows you to set Google as the primary search engine. This decision makes sense, as using Atlas often resembled an enhanced Google search powered by ChatGPT, with a variety of sources and a link to Google Search displayed in the upper right corner.

With this update, ChatGPT Atlas embraces its role as a hybrid browser — both an AI engine and a gateway to the classic web.

Navigation Improvements: Multitabs, Extensions, and Downloads

OpenAI takes the opportunity to roll out several ergonomic tweaks:

  • Selection and movement of multiple tabs by holding Cmd or Shift,
  • Automatic import of extensions from your current browser upon Atlas installation (function forthcoming for existing users),
  • A new, clearer download management interface,
  • Support for iCloud Keychain passkeys, enhancing connection security.

These additions bring Atlas closer to a complete browser without compromising its AI-centric identity.

ChatGPT Atlas: An AI Browser Finding Its Place

Launched last month, ChatGPT Atlas is part of a wave of AI-augmented browsers along with Perplexity Comet and the Gemini extension for Chrome.

Its functionality is dual:

  • Enter a URL to navigate “as usual,”
  • Or ask a question to receive a contextualized answer from ChatGPT, accompanied by verified sources.

With the introduction of vertical tabs and enhanced settings, OpenAI refines its tool and strives to offer a credible alternative to traditional browsers — without abandoning its conversational aspect.
