Sora Explodes on Android: 470,000 Downloads on Its First Day
The launch of Sora on Android starts strong. According to estimates from the analysis firm Appfigures reported by TechCrunch, OpenAI’s AI-based video application is said to have recorded approximately 470,000 downloads from the Google Play Store on its first day of availability — a much stronger start compared to iOS.
An Android Launch Four Times Stronger than iOS
According to the initial figures published, 470,000 installations on Android were recorded on the first day, compared to around 110,000 to 360,000 on iOS (based on revised estimates from Appfigures). This represents a growth of 327% between the two platforms.
However, caution is warranted: the comparison is not entirely fair. On iOS, Sora was limited to the United States and Canada, and access was invitation-only. On Android, the application is available in seven markets: the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Furthermore, OpenAI lifted the invitation restriction at the end of October in its primary countries.
You can now get into the Sora app without an invite code in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea.
Limited time only.

Sora, The AI App That Generates Videos Like TikTok
Developed by OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT), Sora allows users to create AI-generated videos from simple text prompts. Users can also integrate themselves into their creations using the Cameos feature, which animates their faces and those of their friends via artificial intelligence.
The videos appear in a vertical feed similar to TikTok, making it easy to discover others’ creations.
Competition Is Heating Up
Overall, the Sora app on iOS surpassed one million downloads within a week, ranking at the top of the free App Store in the US, where it currently holds the number 4 position.
The success of Sora comes at a time when competition is intensifying in the creative AI application market. Indeed, Meta AI has just launched its own mobile application in Europe following an initial launch in the US, while other players like Runway, Pika Labs, and Kaiber are also working on AI video generation.
With this successful launch, Sora confirms its viral potential and strengthens OpenAI’s presence in the mobile space.
The application could eventually become the “TikTok of generative AI,” a space where anyone can create, explore, and share AI-animated videos — without any technical skills.
