OVH: How to Launch Your Website?

To succeed in the project, it is essential to have a clear overview of the objective. This means understanding the role that the website should fulfill. There are many solutions to launch a website on OVHcloud, such as using one-click modules or manually integrating modules.

Manually launching a website requires some handling on a hosting service. Most of these may be optional based on the site’s type. However, the majority of projects involve two main steps. The first is to upload files to the storage system.

After connecting the site to the storage space, the various folders must be uploaded. It is advisable to be careful about this. For standard use, files should be uploaded to the “www” directory. If the hosting is used for multiple sites, the multisite must be declared.

Since CMS tools require a database to maintain dynamic elements, it is necessary to establish a connection between them and the files. This connection is vital for the website to function correctly. Configuration files containing all necessary information must be used for this connection.

Once the files have been uploaded to the storage space and linked to the database, the website should be accessible.

AI and Big Data Offerings

Since 2020, OVHcloud has offered a tool dedicated to data processing and analysis: Data Processing. This Cloud service is based on the open-source framework Apache Spark. It enables users to simplify and accelerate Big Data processing tasks by leveraging OVH’s cloud servers’ GPUs with a pay-as-you-go model. The deployment and execution of processes are managed by the solution.

This tool was developed internally to meet OVH‘s Big Data needs. With over 2,200 employees, it was challenging for the company to manage its data pipeline scattered amongst many teams.

However, this mastery is essential for enabling Data Science experts to exploit data quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. The firm learned to operate Big Data and AI tools. Drawing on this expertise, it then developed its Data Processing tool to help its many clients facing similar challenges.

In 2021, OVHCloud launched the AI Training service dedicated to training AI models in the Cloud. Data Scientists can easily train their AI models by utilizing the power of OVH’s GPUs without worrying about infrastructure management.

This solution allows for high performance, with state-of-the-art equipment and expandable capacity, at competitive pricing. As a result, teams can save time and improve their productivity.

OVHcloud Marketplace

To drive the development of PaaS and SaaS solutions, OVHcloud has launched its Marketplace, which features 250 ready-to-use digital offers catering to the needs of SMEs and TPEs. These range from ERP and CRM systems to one-click professional website creation, accounting and invoicing software, and SEO solutions.

For partner publishers, the Marketplace provides an additional sales channel for their platforms or software as a service. It also allows them to stand out amongst millions of OVHcloud customers. The marketplace stands out as the only platform capable of offering all these services simultaneously.

Each available solution comes with technical support provided by the vendor. Moreover, hosting user data in Europe ensures data security.

OVHcloud’s Global Ambitions

In October 2019, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, OVH announced its rebranding to OVHcloud. This name change reflects its prioritization of the Cloud, now accounting for 70% of its revenue.

What Are OVHcloud’s Strategic Projects in India?

In 2017, OVHcloud entered the Indian market by acquiring VMware vCloud Air. India has become its largest market in Asia-Pacific, with a 60% increase in its client base during the second half of 2020. To further solidify its presence, a new data center was inaugurated in Mumbai in March 2023, increasing its total number of data centers worldwide to 34.

OVHCloud: Engine of Trusted Cloud and Digital Sovereignty

In response to extraterritorial laws such as the American Cloud Act, OVHCloud represents a reliable European alternative. The company actively advocates for a cloud ecosystem founded on trust, transparency, and GDPR compliance.

By joining the Gaia-X initiative and the Point de Contact association, OVHCloud positions itself as an engaged player. It thus promises a safer internet, transparent and respectful of privacy. The receipt of the SecNumCloud label from ANSSI showcases its high cybersecurity standards. This qualification is crucial for meeting the challenges of public organizations and sensitive companies.

OVHcloud in 2025: Solid Performance and Strategic Acceleration

The fiscal year 2025 (ending August 31, 2025) marked a significant milestone for OVHcloud, with revenue surpassing one billion euros (€1,084.6 million), representing a growth of 9.3%. This performance has been driven by strong demand for its private cloud solutions and an increased momentum in the public cloud, primarily due to the success of artificial intelligence (AI) offerings.

The company has significantly improved its profitability, maintaining an adjusted EBITDA margin of over 40% and a net profit returning to positive territory. The 2025 strategy continues to be centered around several major pillars to position itself as a “trusted and sovereign hyperscaler.”

Thus, the deployment in major global cities is ongoing, targeting a total of 42 Local Zones by the end of the fiscal year to enhance client proximity and resilience.

Additionally, the launch of solutions like AI Endpoints simplifies AI integration, and the introduction of Managed Kubernetes Service (MKS) Standard in region 3-AZ for improved resilience meets the requirements of critical applications.

OVHcloud has also received the SecNumCloud 3.2 qualification for its Bare Metal Pod platform, reaffirming its commitment to digital sovereignty for public and private sector players.

These advancements, coupled with the reunification of the roles of Chairman of the Board and CEO with Octave Klaba appointed as CEO in October 2025, position OVHcloud for an acceleration of its strategic plan “Shaping the Future.” This plan aims for profitable and sustainable growth.

OVHcloud Strengthens Its Object Storage Offer with the Acquisition of OpenIO

In July 2020, OVHcloud acquired OpenIO, a French company specializing in fast object storage. This acquisition aims to create a highly scalable, open-source, hardware-independent object storage solution, addressing the growing performance and flexibility needs of enterprises.

Founded in 2015, OpenIO developed an S3-compatible object storage solution suitable for Big Data, HPC, and AI workloads. Its technology relies on a distributed grid architecture, allowing for horizontal scalability and dynamic data management. This approach ensures optimal performance, even at scale, while providing data protection through synchronous and asynchronous replication, as well as Reed-Solomon-based error correction coding.

Acquisition of ForePaaS

In April 2022, OVHcloud acquired ForePaaS, an integrated platform specializing in data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence projects. This acquisition allows OVHcloud to expand its PaaS offerings, providing clients with integrated tools to initiate, simplify, and accelerate data analysis and machine learning projects.

What Is Gaia-X and Why Does OVHcloud Participate?

With the Gaia-X project initiated by Germany and France, Europe aims to free itself from American and Chinese giants and reclaim its digital sovereignty by developing its cloud ecosystem.

The objective of this coalition is the construction of a “networked secure data infrastructure.” The initiative gathers cloud providers, institutions, and users.

This European “meta-cloud” will first take the form of a repository regarding data localization, certifications, and service types. Then it will manifest as a continuously evolving catalogue of validated and secure solutions.

Among the 24 founding members of this association based in Belgium, OVHcloud stands alongside other French companies such as Atos, Docaposte, EDF, Safran, Orange, Outscale, and Scaleway. They are joined by major German companies like Deutsche Telekom, SAP, Siemens, BMW, and Bosch.

OVHCloud x Google: A Strategic Partnership for a Sovereign Hybrid Cloud

The collaboration between OVHCloud and Google Cloud aims to build a 100% European hybrid infrastructure. This alliance enables a response to regulatory and operational challenges faced by businesses on the continent. The partnership hinges on Anthos, Google’s hybrid cloud solution, and OVHCloud’s European data centers, allowing for secure deployment of cloud-native applications.

Moreover, the infrastructure is managed solely by OVHCloud, ensuring full confidentiality of data and storage within the European Union. This partnership represents a significant step towards a sovereign and efficient cloud.

Why Is SecNumCloud Certification Crucial for OVHcloud?

Highly sought after by cloud providers, the SecNumCloud certification is also challenging to obtain. OVH announced in January 2021 that it has acquired this certification from ANSSI (National Cybersecurity Agency of France). As a result, it joins a select list of certified providers, including 3DS Outscale (the cloud for Dassault) and Orange.

This label is granted to providers offering a Hosted Private Cloud solution based on VMware technology.

With the SecNumCloud certification, enterprises and organizations engaged in sensitive activities can trust OVH. This also applies to Vital Importance Operators (OIV), Essential Service Operators (OSE), and Digital Service Providers (FSN).

According to Julien Levrard, CISO of OVHcloud, this certification signifies “the culmination of a 10-year maturity ascent” for the company’s private cloud offering.

This stems from several factors, including “an in-depth understanding of platform security, an established action plan management structure, and systems aimed at ensuring our clients’ data localization. These systems are supported by a highly qualified expert team.”

A Trusted Service

According to the CISO, the qualification standard has prompted OVH to “raise the bar even higher. This is to offer a trusted service accessible to the greatest number, thanks to our industrial approach.”

To this end, enhanced security and isolation measures housing Hosted Private Cloud services are located in OVHcloud’s two new data centers, particularly in Roubaix and Strasbourg. Extremely strict physical and organizational security protocols have been established to meet ANSSI standards…

In practical terms, this means that clients will benefit from a resistance against cyberattacks along with dedicated systems that are physically and logically isolated from other OVHCloud services. They will also have the ability to identify and control threats through a dedicated perimeter and a personalized support level.

Contractual guarantees addressing confidentiality and data protection are also in place. Only OVHCloud’s European personnel will have access to data, and this information will not be transferred outside the EU…

OVH Begins Process for IPO in Paris

Through this initiative, the company aims to accelerate its international growth in order to compete with major cloud service providers like Google Cloud, Azure, and AWS.

The provider has successfully gained approval for its reference document, allowing it to proceed to the IPO phase with AMF (French Financial Market Authority). The company has indicated in its announcement that its main objective is to raise €400 million through the issuance of new shares during the operation.

This action is subject to the AMF’s approval of a prospectus. It is intended to facilitate the admission of shares for trading in the sector, under favorable economic criteria. The Wall Street Journal reports that the operation is expected to value OVH at an estimated €4 billion.

For OVH, this IPO would ensure a trajectory of accelerated and sustainable development both in Europe and worldwide. Moreover, this cloud market is estimated at €120 billion in 2020 and dominated by several players. The company also plans to support its expansion into Asia and North America using this funding.

The firm also announced that its trend towards ensuring a significant, robust, and profitable expansion has been demonstrated. Its annual revenue growth rate has exceeded 20% over the past ten years.

OVHcloud Joins the Open Invention Network in Support of the Open Source Movement

At the end of 2020, OVHcloud joined the Open Invention Network (OIN). This network supports the Open Source software movement and actions in Linux.

Founded by Google, IBM, NEC, Philips, Sony, SUSE, and Toyota, this community comprises over 3,300 members. It holds and shares more than 1,300 patents and applications.

With its Linux System patent portfolio, both current and future, OVHcloud enhances OIN. The goal? To promote open innovation and support the Open Source community.

OVHcloud has always viewed openness as essential to innovation in the cloud domain. According to co-founder Miroslaw Klaba, the company seeks to develop an open cloud, allowing everyone to innovate freely and securely.

As Keith Bergelt, CEO of the Open Invention Network, explains, this also serves as a protection against viewing entities that aggressively assert patents (commonly known as “patent trolls”), increasingly prevalent in the Cloud era…

OVH Data Center Fire: Millions of Websites Suffer Downtime

On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, OVH was struck by disaster. SGB2, one of the four data centers in Strasbourg, along with the second center, SGB1, was ravaged by fire.

Despite immediate intervention from over a hundred firefighters, the fire could not be controlled in time. Consequently, nearly 3.6 million websites hosted by the French provider went down: online shops, banks, news sites, cryptocurrency exchange platforms.

Even government websites were affected, including those in France, the UK, Poland, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The chess gaming site Lichess.org lost 24 hours of gameplay history. The video game Rust also indicated that some data would be lost permanently.

Other companies lost access to their email accounts, such as the Caroline Charles Communication agency which was cut off from its emails during Paris Fashion Week. An African internet service provider, AFR-IX, was left entirely incapacitated.

According to Kaspersky, this situation also affected cybercriminals. Command and control servers for malware were lost in the fire, including those belonging to Charming Kitten, APT39, Bahamut, or OceanLotus.

Rebuilding the Centers’ Equipment

According to OVHcloud’s CEO, Octave Klaba, the goal for the next two weeks is to reconstruct the center’s equipment and check their optical connections.

The factory in Roubaix has begun manufacturing replacement servers, capable of producing over 2,500 servers in a week and 10,000 servers in a month.

As for the cause of the fire, it remains undetermined. However, thermal cameras used by firefighters upon arrival revealed fires in the uninterruptible power systems UPS7 and UPS8.

UPS7 had undergone maintenance<|vq_11625|> on the day before the disaster. The provider changed many parts to bring the system back online the same day.

Thus, it is highly probable that the fire originated from this system. However, Octave Klaba assures that data extracted from the 300 cameras on-site will help better understand the disaster’s origins.

Ironically, two days prior, OVH announced its intention to go public. Following this disastrous incident, the reputation and credibility of the French company are likely to be compromised, marking a significant setback as the firm aims to compete with Amazon, Google, or Microsoft in the Cloud market…

Firefighters Highlight Failures in Their Report

One year after this fire, firefighters specializing in “technological and specific risks” released a report that outlined several shortcomings. Among them is the absence of an emergency power shutdown system, which had dramatic consequences. Firefighters took two hours to disconnect the power supply from the data center.

The fire broke out around 12:40 AM on March 10. Teams from Electricity of Strasbourg arrived on-site at 1:20 AM, but encountered difficulties in shutting off the power. They were unable to cut off the electricity either in the burning area or at the site, contributing to the flames’ spread.

It was not until 3:28 AM that the power supply to the site was effectively cut off, even then, the UPS units were still live, according to the firefighters. Thus, some clients of OVH’s hosting or cloud services did not notice an immediate cessation of their server(s).

The firefighters also cited the lack of an automatic shutdown mechanism. The site relies on a system for immediate detection and alerting the services. A collective of 130 companies has filed suit against OVH, which includes at least six Alsatian companies.

Strasbourg Data Center Fire: No State Data Lost

In September 2021, during a ministerial visit from Agnès Pannier-Runacher to the Croix site (Nord), OVH confirmed that the services of the State did not lose “any data” during the fire. The director general of OVHCloud, Michel Paulin, remarked that “the State had equipped itself with what are called + activity recovery plans+ that are extremely efficient.” These backup mechanisms enabled data retention despite the disaster.

However, as clients differ in their backup policies, OVHcloud admits it does not have figures on the number of clients who lost data permanently.

During this visit, Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher praised OVHcloud, which employs over 2,500 people and operates 33 data centers. This group is also “an industrial player” as it designs and manufactures its servers in its two factories in Croix and Quebec.

The French firm is managing to position itself among the “top ten global cloud providers,” competing against American GAFA giants and large Chinese players. The minister reminded that the State is working on “a sovereign cloud strategy pushed at the European level” and that “the cloud is a potential element of our sovereignty.

Octave Klaba Acquires Shadow, the French Cloud Gaming Service

Very happy to have been selected by the Commercial Court of Paris for the 1UP of @Shadow_France!

The ambition is simple: to build the best cloud gaming offering in the world! Now we have everything in one box: talented team, no CAPEX worries, the global market! pic.twitter.com/Yz3RlV02dy

— Octave Klaba (@olesovhcom) April 30, 2021

Among several candidacies, the Commercial Court of Paris selected Octave Klaba to purchase the cloud gaming service Shadow. The founder of OVHCloud has acquired the startup Blade and its Shadow service through his investment fund Jezby Ventures.

If you haven’t heard of it, Shadow is a cloud gaming service. The concept is to allow “gamers” to play video games on any internet-connected screen via the Cloud. Users simply pay a monthly subscription for access to a powerful PC hosted in a data center.

It is possible to connect to this PC from a computer, smartphone, tablet, or smart TV. Images are streamed to the screen, and commands entered by the user are conveyed to the server.

Shadow: One of the Best Cloud Gaming Services in the World

There are already several cloud gaming services, such as Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, or Nvidia GeForce Now. However, Shadow stands out by providing access to a complete PC via the Cloud. This service is not limited to gaming, unlike its competitors. Users enjoy a full Windows 10 instance and can run any software.

Promising, the startup Blade has raised over $100 million since its inception through several funding rounds. Unfortunately, it struggled to keep up with order demand and did not generate sufficient revenue to reach its break-even point. Despite having 100,000 users, the company came close to bankruptcy.

Several potential acquirers participated in the bidding. The CTO of Blade, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, also submitted a proposal alongside other employees. Ultimately, Octave Klaba’s offer was selected. He aims to retain all of Blade’s employees, except for Jean-Baptiste Kempf.

It remains to be seen if any changes will be made to the service’s pricing or operation in the coming weeks. Regardless, Octave Klaba has stated on Twitter that he wants to make Shadow the best cloud gaming service in the world…

Thales Chooses OVHCloud to Host Its Encrypted Messaging Service Citadel Team

In the context of general teleworking due to the health crisis, cyberattacks against employees working from home have multiplied. According to ANSSI, their numbers quadrupled in 2020 compared to 2019.

This phenomenon has further heightened the need for data sharing security and communication application security. In this context, Thales has chosen OVHCloud to host its encrypted messaging service Citadel Team.

Already adopted by one-third of CAC 40 companies, Citadel Team employs the same encryption system used by 50 NATO member countries. This service guarantees users that their data will not be used or sold to third parties. It recently received the label “cybersecurity 2021.” With OVH as a host, there is also the assurance that the data will remain stored in France.

Besides its encrypted messaging service, Citadel Team also provides video conferencing, group calling, and screen sharing features. New functionalities will be added over time to deliver an all-in-one communication solution without compromising data security.

OVH: Data Backup Now Free

In the wake of the fire at its data centers in Strasbourg last March, which left a significant portion of the French web in turmoil, OVH is attempting to rectify the situation. To reiterate, some clients completely lost their data, while others had to wait for access to their websites.

In an interview with BFMTV, the company’s CEO, Octave Klaba, announced the free provision of data backup for all clients. This is a genuine surprise, as this type of service typically incurs costs. Octave Klaba believes that the rest of the industry should normatively follow his company’s lead.

For this new challenge, OVH seems to be making the necessary investments to match its ambitions. Indeed, the firm will open several data centers in the Paris region, exclusively designated for data backup.

Moreover, to prevent such an industrial disaster from recurring, the company also announces it will revise all of its standards related to data center construction.
