Huawei Mate 80 Pro will have a dual selfie camera for the first time

Huawei Mate 80 Pro will feature a dual selfie camera for the first time

The launch of the Huawei Mate 80 series is approaching, and according to the latest leaks, Huawei is preparing a major change in its front camera strategy. The Mate 80 Pro (and likely the Pro+ and RS Ultimate Design versions) may introduce a dual selfie camera — a first for the Mate lineup.

A Dual Front Camera for the Mate 80 Pro

While the standard model, the Mate 80, will retain a single front camera, the Pro version could adopt two dedicated selfie sensors. This evolution marks a turning point: until now, Huawei reserved the dual front camera for its Nova series, known for its affordable photo performance.

The Nova 14 Ultra, for instance, uses a setup with a primary 50-megapixel sensor (1/2.5”), capable of capturing 90% more light than its predecessor, along with a secondary 8-megapixel sensor with 2x zoom, optimized for portraits.

The result: detailed selfies, more natural depth effects, and enhanced 3D facial recognition. Huawei may adopt this winning formula for the Mate 80 Pro, tailored for a premium audience.

An AI-Enhanced Selfie with 3D Recognition

According to multiple sources, the dual front camera of the Mate 80 Pro would be closely integrated with Huawei’s 3D facial recognition system, improved for greater accuracy and security.

The second sensor would play a key role in depth mapping, natural bokeh effects, and advanced biometric detection — similar to Face ID on iPhone.

In other words, Huawei aims for a smarter, more precise, and immersive selfie experience.

A Distinctive Design

Real photos already shared from China show the Mate 80 Pro with a refreshed design:

  • A circular camera module on the back, a signature of the series, redesigned with three sensors.
  • The top sensor would be a periscope telephoto lens,
  • The two below: a primary and an ultra-wide sensor,
  • An additional sensor for light or color detection, surrounded by a metallic ring for a premium finish.

The smartphone has been spotted in bright yellow and black, but other colors are expected to follow, especially for the RS variants.

Under the Hood: Power and Innovation

The Mate 80 Pro will not just rely on its photo design. Here’s what rumors suggest:

  • New Kirin processor, likely an upgraded version of the Kirin 9000S,
  • 100W fast charging,
  • Active cooling system, possibly with a mini fan integrated in some editions,
  • RS Ultimate Design version with a titanium chassis and dual-layer OLED display for better durability.

A Direct Competitor to the OnePlus 15 and the Xiaomi 17

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro enters a highly competitive Chinese market, where it will need to compete with giants like the OnePlus 15, known for its “gaming and performance” focus, and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra with its gigantic camera module.

To stand out, Huawei is clearly betting on photo innovation and premium finishing, two areas where the brand still has a reputation for excellence.

Launch and Availability

  • Expected announcement: by the end of the month in China
  • Global rollout: throughout 2026, depending on the markets
  • Estimated price (China): between 5,999 and 7,999 yuan (~ 730 – 975 euros), depending on configuration

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro could be the smartphone for discerning selfie enthusiasts, combining technical innovation with a premium approach. If the dual front camera is confirmed, Huawei will position selfie photography at the heart of the flagship experience — providing a serious alternative to high-end iPhones and Galaxies.
