Huawei prepares to respond to the iPhone Air with the ultra-thin Mate 70 Air

Following the launch of the iPhone Air by Apple, Huawei is ready to unveil its own ultra-thin smartphone: the Mate 70 Air. The device has already surfaced on China Telecom’s website, and several recent leaks have clarified its release date and specifications.

According to the well-known leaker Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, the Huawei Mate 70 Air will be revealed before the end of the month, with a thickness of less than 7 mm — more specifically, “6.x mm.”

Another reputable source, Panda is very bald, claims a launch date set for October 29, which is Tuesday.

Unlike the iPhone Air, the Mate 70 Air will not feature eSIM and will rely exclusively on physical SIM cards. This is a strategic choice, as eSIM adoption remains very low in China and Taiwan (estimated at less than 1%), mainly due to the complex activation processes and additional fees imposed by carriers.

Specifications of the Huawei Mate 70 Air

The Mate 70 Air is expected to include:

  • Display: 6.9 inches in an 18.8:9 aspect ratio, bezel-less
  • Main camera sensor: 1/1.3 inch sensor with “Red Maple” optics, housed within the brand’s signature circular XMAGE module
  • Memory: 12 GB of RAM, with storage options of 256 or 512 GB
  • Operating system: HarmonyOS 5

The Return of a Tradition at Huawei

This is not the first time Huawei has made a mark in the ultra-thin smartphone segment. As early as 2012, the brand launched the Ascend P1 S (6.68 mm), followed by the P6 (6.2 mm) and P7 (6.5 mm). The Mate 70 Air seems to be reconnecting with this legacy while modernizing both design and performance.

If it lives up to expectations, this new model could provide a more practical and market-friendly alternative to the iPhone Air in Asia — potentially reigniting the race for ultra-thin smartphones.
