Google Messages may soon feature a trash bin to retrieve your deleted conversations
Have you ever accidentally deleted an important text or even an entire conversation? Good news: Google Messages may soon introduce an integrated trash bin that allows you to restore deleted messages for a limited time.
Google Messages: A Small Change, But A Significant Improvement In Usability
According to a recent discovery by Android Authority, newly added code in Google Messages explicitly mentions a “trash bin” or “deleted conversations.”
It appears that Google is preparing a feature similar to Gmail’s trash : deleted messages would be kept for 30 days before being automatically removed. This approach offers a balanced option between permanent deletion and the existing archiving function.
Currently, a deleted message disappears without any way to recover it, while an archived message remains on the device indefinitely, occupying unnecessary space.
A Logical Extension Of Google’s Efforts In 2025
This new feature aligns with the ongoing improvements Google has been making to its messaging app since the beginning of the year, including warnings for sensitive content, a new photo gallery, corrected group icons, and better integration with multimedia services.
With this future trash bin, Google seems set on making Messages safer and more flexible, while also aligning its functionality with that of other Google services.
Not Official Yet, But Promising
As always with code analysis, there is no guarantee that this feature will be implemented. However, if Google confirms its rollout, this temporary trash system would be a welcome addition—especially for those who have accidentally deleted a message.
In the meantime, the archive remains your best ally for preserving important conversations… without cluttering your phone.
