Gemini Interrupting You? Google Tests Open Microphone Mode for Long Questions

Google’s Gemini assistant is known for its accuracy and extensive knowledge of the world — capable of recalling a simple line from a TV show that aired over 50 years ago.

However, if you’ve ever asked a long question out loud, you may have noticed an issue: Gemini interrupts you before you’ve finished your sentence.

Gemini: Assistant Lacking (Still) in Patience

When you pose a verbal question through the Gemini app (on Android or iOS, or in place of Google Assistant), the chatbot interprets any pause as the end of your question. Consequently, if you take a moment to think, it rushes to respond — often missing the mark.

Of course, you can type your question to avoid this problem, but that defeats the purpose of voice commands.

Google Tests a Simple Solution: Keeping the Microphone Open

According to Android Authority, Google is currently testing a new option in version 16.42.61 of the Google app. This feature will allow you to keep the microphone activated as long as you wish by long-pressing the microphone icon.

Once “locked,” the microphone remains open until you hit the “Stop” button to deactivate it.

This enhancement will allow for natural pauses while speaking, without the risk of interrupting your query.

It’s important to note: this feature does not affect Gemini Live, the interactive version of the chatbot designed for ongoing conversations.

Other New Features for Gemini

In parallel, Google is also rolling out a new floating input box and a redesigned interface for Gemini Live. If you’re using Gemini instead of Google Assistant, you can now ask it to:

  • set an alarm or timer,
  • turn Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or the flashlight on/off,
  • adjust the volume,
  • open applications or take screenshots.

These functions are part of the “Utilities” extension integrated into Gemini.

When Will This New Feature Arrive?

Google has not yet announced an official rollout date, but the internal testing suggests it will be available soon.

The Gemini app is available on Android (via the Play Store) and on iPhone (via the App Store).
