Huawei Mate 80: 3D facial recognition comes to all models

Huawei Mate 80: The 3D Facial Recognition Comes to All Models

Huawei has started to reveal the first official details of its upcoming Mate 80 lineup, and one thing is already clear: the brand intends to make a strong impact in terms of software and security.

The company confirmed that the new smartphones will be the first to launch directly with HarmonyOS 6.

Mate 80: 3D Facial Recognition on All Models

According to the technical documentation released for HarmonyOS developers, all models in the Mate 80 series will support 3D facial recognition — a first for Huawei.

Previously, this technology was limited to the Pro and RS versions. Now, even the standard Mate 80 will feature the same advanced unlocking system, based on a 3D mapping of the face.

Currently, only the Mate 80 series and the Mate Pro or higher models support 3D facial recognition (foldable screens and the P series are not yet compatible).”, reads the Huawei Developer documentation.

Four Models Expected in November

Huawei is set to unveil the complete lineup in November, consisting of:

  • Mate 80
  • Mate 80 Pro
  • Mate 80 Pro+
  • Mate 80 RS

Kirin 9030 Chip and Familiar Design

Under the hood, the new Mate 80 devices will feature the Kirin 9030 chip, focusing on optimizing the architecture rather than just raw power. Coupled with HarmonyOS 6, it is expected to provide a smoother and more energy-efficient experience.

In terms of design, early engineering units confirm a style similar to the Mate 80 Pro, featuring a centered circular camera module, a dual-temperature flash, a symmetrical sensor, and a multispectral lens.

Mate 80 RS: Dual-Layer OLED Screen and Premium Finish

The Mate 80 RS, being the top-of-the-line model, is rumored to come with a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED screen that is brighter and more durable, while also reducing energy consumption.

A Revolution: Goodbye to the Physical SIM Card?

Another significant rumor is that the Mate 80 series could transition entirely to eSIM, eliminating the physical SIM tray altogether — a first for Huawei. The Huawei Mate 80 is poised for a coherent upgrade: enhanced security, next-generation display, and deeper integration with HarmonyOS 6.

A major launch to watch closely in November.
