Huawei launches the Nova Flip S: the most affordable foldable smartphone from the brand

As rumored, Huawei has officially unveiled its latest Nova Flip S in China, the direct successor to the original Nova Flip. This new model marks a significant shift: it retains a premium design while drastically reducing the entry price into Huawei’s foldable lineup.

While the first Nova Flip launched at 5,288 yuan (~€635), the Nova Flip S starts at just 3,488 yuan (~€420) — a much more aggressive positioning.

This makes it the most accessible foldable smartphone Huawei currently offers in China.

Design: Slim Profile and New Colors

The Nova Flip S retains the same slim profile of 6.9mm and lightweight design at 195g as its predecessor. Huawei has introduced two new finishes: Sky Blue and Feather Sand Black, alongside existing colors such as New Green, Zero White, Sakura Pink, and Star Black.

The external display remains a square 2.14-inch (480 × 480 pixels) but is now more customizable with:

  • Animated themes (animals, weather, etc.),
  • DIY wallpapers,
  • Interactive displays for calls and notifications.

Users can also pin mini-apps (weather, calendar, QR code, delivery tracking) to this cover screen.

Internal Display and Battery

Inside, there’s a large 6.9-inch OLED LTPO display with a resolution of 1136×2698 and an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 Hz. The droplet hinge design minimizes the visibility of the crease and boasts a Swiss SGS certification ensuring 1.2 million open/close cycles.

For battery life, the Nova Flip S features a 4,400 mAh battery with 66W fast charging. It also includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and splash resistance (IP certification for everyday use).

Cameras

Huawei equips the Nova Flip S with a dual-camera setup:

  • 50 megapixels (f/1.9) for the main sensor,
  • 8 megapixels (f/2.2) for the ultra-wide lens.

On the front, there’s a 32-megapixel selfie camera, perfect for mirror selfies using the external display. All three sensors support 4K video recording with AIS stabilization.

Nova Flip S: Performance and Software

The Nova Flip S runs on HarmonyOS 5.1, but Huawei hasn’t specified the processor used — a detail that raises curiosity, as the manufacturer often alternates between its Kirin and Snapdragon 4G chips based on market demands.

The Huawei Nova Flip S will be available in China with two configurations:

  • 8GB + 256GB priced at 3,488 ¥ (~€420)
  • 8GB + 512GB for 3,788 ¥ (~€455)
