Xiaomi 17 Pro: The Rear Screen Is No Longer a Gadget, It Is the Key to Xiaomi’s Record Success

Xiaomi has taken four years to fully realize its concept of a rear screen on smartphones. With the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, the Chinese brand reintroduces this idea first showcased with the Mi 11 Ultra, and this time, it seems genuinely committed to it.

Xiaomi 17 Pro: The Return of the Dual-Screen, 2025 Edition

During a recent livestream, Xiaomi’s president, Lu Weibing, confirmed that upcoming smartphones from the brand will continue to feature this dual-display design, while announcing an increase in R&D investments in the coming years.

According to Lu, over a billion yuan (approximately €130 million) has been invested in the development of this technology.

The result: a 2.1-inch AMOLED secondary screen that matches the performance of the main display.

  • LTPO frequency of 120 Hz,
  • Dragon Crystal Glass protection,
  • HDR compatibility,
  • and a record brightness of 3,500 nits.

A true technological gem embedded directly in the camera module.

A Monumental Hit in China

This gamble seems to be greatly rewarded by sales. The Xiaomi 17 series has shattered records in China, becoming the best-selling smartphone lineup of 2025, across all segments.

In just five minutes, the phone broke launch sales records. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max set a new record for daily sales of a domestic smartphone. Overall sales increased by 20% compared to the previous generation, and the Pro series saw a threefold growth in sales.

This success demonstrates that the dual screen is far from being just a marketing gimmick.

More Than a Gadget: An Intelligent and Practical Tool

The rear screen of the Xiaomi 17 Pro goes well beyond mere aesthetics. It allows users to check notifications, answer calls, display a real-time preview of photos, or even bring up virtual pets and dynamic AI wallpapers.

Moreover, it has more practical everyday uses: displaying food pickup codes, electronic tickets, or travel itineraries.

And this is just the beginning: Lu Weibing announced that a real-time translation feature will soon be available directly on the rear screen, expected by the end of October, with monthly updates to follow.
