Meta AI breaks language barriers: translated Reels roll out in four languages
Meta is expanding its global ambitions surrounding artificial intelligence with its platform, Meta AI. Following an initial phase launched this summer, the giant behind Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp is now rolling out automatic translation of Reels in four languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese.
This new feature transforms Meta’s social platforms into true multilingual spaces, where creators can finally engage with international audiences—without needing to record multiple versions of their videos.
Meta AI Allows Creators to Speak in Every Language
Launched last August, the project’s first phase was limited to bidirectional translation between English and Spanish. Now, Hindi and Portuguese have been added to the mix, two strategically important languages for Meta that are present in some of the world’s largest markets.

The feature relies on An AI voice cloning technology that can replicate the creator’s voice, tone, and rhythm while translating their spoken words into another language. The result is that the video retains the personality and intonations of its creator, simply… in another language.
As an added bonus, a lip-syncing function automatically adjusts the movements of the lips to match the audio translation. The effect is striking, akin to what some professional AI dubbing tools already offer.

Each translated Reel prominently displays a label stating “Translated with Meta AI,” ensuring transparency for users. Those who prefer the original version can disable the translation with one click from the audio menu.
A Feature Designed for Creators
Meta claims these new options emerged from direct feedback from creators who want to make their videos accessible to a broader audience. The system is free and currently available for Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers, and for all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is already deployed.
However, Meta notes that some AI features remain geographically limited—but the United States and major markets in Asia and Europe already have access to the service.

“We want to enable everyone to listen and express themselves with confidence, regardless of the language,” explains Matt Sheets, product lead at Google Translate (Meta AI). “AI is not just a technical tool; it’s a bridge between people, cultures, and ideas.” This positioning reflects Meta’s desire to transcend mere entertainment: with Reels, the company seeks to redefine the cultural reach of its platforms.
With these intelligent translations, Instagram and Facebook are becoming global platforms on par with YouTube, where language barriers are gradually disappearing.
This deployment coincides with the rise of Meta AI, which is already integrated into other company products, and falls in line with the broader trend of AI-driven localized content—a market projected to exceed $30 billion by 2027, according to Statista.
For creators, the impact is direct: increased reach, less dubbing work, and the opportunity to engage previously inaccessible audiences.
