Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: A foldable smartphone with three screens… and three batteries!
As Samsung prepares to unveil its first-ever foldable smartphone with a triple screen, rumors are intensifying around this upcoming technological marvel.
Temporarily named Galaxy Z TriFold, the device could feature three distinct batteries, according to a patent filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS).
Galaxy Z TriFold: A foldable device with three energy modules
The recently published patent reveals that each segment of the Galaxy Z TriFold would house its own battery cell.
Specifically:
- the smallest battery would be located in the rear module, which will house the camera sensors,
- the intermediate battery would be positioned in the central part, behind the cover screen,
- and the largest battery would be placed in the main panel, which gets folded when the device is closed.
The three batteries would have different shapes and thicknesses, tailored to the complex structure of this three-fold device.

A complex yet ingenious architecture
This triple battery design would allow Samsung to better balance the weight of the phone while optimizing battery life. It could also reduce thermal constraints, a recurring challenge for foldable models.
However, the patent does not specify the exact capacities of the cells or the anticipated charging speeds. Previous leaks suggest the use of a silicon-carbon battery, which is expected to offer higher energy density, though this does not guarantee a significant capacity increase.
A battery life trailing Huawei?
According to early rumors, the Galaxy Z TriFold may have a smaller battery compared to the Huawei Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. The Mate XT features a battery of 5,600 mAh and supports fast charging at 66 W (and 50 W wirelessly).
In contrast, Samsung is aiming for a wired charging capacity of 25 W, a figure considered conservative for such an ambitious device. This choice may stem from a desire to maintain internal temperatures and ensure the durability of the folding mechanism.
A prototype above all
Similar to the first Galaxy Z Fold in 2019, this Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to be primarily a pilot experience. Samsung appears to be targeting early adopters, tech enthusiasts ready to experiment with the initial generations.
The smartphone might be launched in the United States and a few key markets, without initially aiming for mass appeal. This approach would allow the manufacturer to test the concept, address its limitations, and prepare a more refined version for future years.
The Galaxy Z TriFold promises to be a world first for Samsung, featuring a triple hinge and an unprecedented internal design. Even if its battery performance seems cautious, this model could redefine the foldable category by combining versatility, power, and ingenuity.
But don’t be mistaken: it will primarily be a commercial prototype intended to lay the groundwork for a new generation of Galaxy devices.
