iPhone Fold: Apple could combine aluminum and titanium for the chassis, a balance between thinness and strength?
A new rumor has reignited the discussion surrounding the highly anticipated iPhone Fold. According to a report from analyst Jeff Pu, reported by 9to5Mac, Apple’s future foldable smartphone—likely named iPhone 18 Fold—will feature a structure combining aluminum and titanium.
In contrast to previous leaks suggesting a 100% titanium structure, this new report indicates that Apple may have chosen a blend of aluminum and titanium for the device’s main frame. The analyst has not specified how these materials will be distributed—some speculate that titanium could reinforce hinge areas while aluminum would reduce the overall weight.
For context, the renowned Ming-Chi Kuo had previously asserted that Apple planned to use stainless steel and titanium for the chassis and hinge, a combination expected to ensure strength and durability.
iPhone Fold: Expected release alongside the iPhone 18?
According to Jeff Pu, the iPhone Fold is expected to launch in 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 series. However, other sources suggest a possible delay to 2027, as Apple aims to refine its design and screen technologies before entering the already competitive foldable market, led by Samsung and Huawei.
Rumors have been accumulating since 2023:
- Format: A large foldable device similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, featuring an internal display without a visible crease.
- Security: A possible return of Touch ID, reintroduced for ergonomic reasons related to the folding design.
- Materials: Titanium for strength, aluminum for lightweight construction.
- Cameras: A total of four sensors—two on the back, one on the internal display, and one on the external face.
- Connectivity: An eSIM-only system, without a physical SIM card slot.
- Design inspired by the iPhone Air, showcasing extreme thinness inherited from that model.
Many analysts believe that the iPhone Air will serve as a conceptual base for the design of the future foldable iPhone: two slim chassis combined for a lightweight and balanced device.
Apple prepares to enter a mature market
As Samsung has launched its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and brands like Honor and OPPO roll out multiple foldable models, Apple appears to be treading cautiously. Engineers in Cupertino are reportedly striving to avoid any compromises on durability and premium feel—two critical aspects for a device likely to exceed €2,000 upon release.
