In the past, the App Store was the only authorized boutique on iOS. However, Brussels has forced Apple to allow other stores on iPhones with the Digital Markets Act. The goal is to challenge the monopoly of the Cupertino firm.
A new store is emerging, called AltStore PAL. This alternative takes advantage of the Digital Markets Act of the European Union to expand globally. In addition to Europe, this store will be available in Japan, Brazil, and Australia. Riley Testut, the creator of the store, has announced this expansion project but has not shared a specific timeline.
AltStore PAL is an alternative to the App Store on the iPhone
The situation is ironic, as the creator of AltStore PAL explains that the team is waiting for Apple to provide “more information on the exact timeline.” Even though this store aims to be independent, it remains heavily tied to Apple’s decisions.
While Europe now mandates that Apple allow third-party stores, this is not the case in the United States. However, the Department of Justice is working to ensure that the Cupertino firm implements this openness on the U.S. continent. There are discussions of a potential lengthy legal battle before the Californian company might be forced to accept these third-party stores.
Despite the existence of alternatives like AltStore PAL, most iPhone users still rely on the App Store. The store is secure and user-friendly, and the community trusts Apple, even at the expense of their choice and freedom.
So, will any stores rise to challenge the giant that is the App Store? That remains to be seen. But AltStore PAL is doing everything it can to achieve this while adhering to Apple’s rules and decisions.
Nevertheless, AltStore PAL offers applications that can’t be found on the App Store. However, keep in mind that the security checks are likely less stringent than those at Apple and its specialized teams. There may be malware and other harmful software in the store. Regardless, having an alternative is always a positive thing for users seeking more freedom.
