WhatsApp prepares to introduce usernames: Is the mandatory phone number coming to an end?
Since its launch, WhatsApp has always operated under a simple rule: each account is tied to a phone number. While this method makes it easy to find contacts, it also has its limitations.
Now, Meta seems ready to take a significant step: the introduction of customizable usernames.
The information comes from WABetaInfo, a trusted source that closely tracks WhatsApp updates. In the latest beta version of the Android app, a new option has appeared in the settings, allowing users to reserve a username.
This reservation system appears to be a logical move. Meta plans to roll out the feature gradually, and allowing users to secure their identifiers in advance will help prevent identity theft. We can expect a rush for the simplest or most sought-after usernames, similar to what happened during the launches of Twitter or Instagram.
Why Is This Change Important for WhatsApp?
Until now, the phone number was the only way to create and manage a WhatsApp account. While this was simple, it also posed several issues.
First, a phone number is sensitive data: sharing your WhatsApp contact means sharing personal information. Additionally, changing numbers required transferring your account, which could be cumbersome. Lastly, contacting an unknown person—especially in a professional context—could present a security risk.
With the introduction of usernames, WhatsApp will finally catch up with its competitors. Telegram and Signal already offer this type of identifier, allowing users to chat without revealing their phone numbers. Even Apple iMessage allows using an email address as an identifier.
A Large-Scale Deployment, but Complex
Meta has not yet announced an official release date, but it’s clear why this new feature is taking time. WhatsApp currently boasts over 3 billion monthly active users. Migrating such a large user base to a new identification system requires extreme caution to avoid duplicates, data loss, or identity theft.
This is why the idea of reserving usernames seems pertinent. It facilitates a smooth transition while giving everyone a chance to retain their historical nickname or username, often used across multiple platforms.
A Significant Turning Point for WhatsApp
The introduction of usernames marks a major strategic shift for WhatsApp. More than just a practical addition, it represents an evolution that enhances the app’s privacy and flexibility, bringing Meta closer to the standards established by its rivals.
