Sora, OpenAI’s video app, soars at launch despite invite-only access
Still in invite-only phase and limited to the United States and Canada, OpenAI’s mobile application Sora has already become a sensation.
According to data from Appfigures, as reported by TechCrunch, the app had 56,000 downloads on its first day, reaching 164,000 installations within two days (September 30 and October 1). As a result, Sora has already secured 3rd place in the overall ranking of the US App Store.
With 56,000 downloads at launch, Sora outperformed Anthropic’s Claude (21,000) and Microsoft’s Copilot (7,000). It even matched Elon Musk’s Grok app (56,000), falling just behind major players ChatGPT (81,000) and Google’s Gemini (80,000).
While the comparison may be skewed since Sora is invite-only, these numbers indicate a massive public interest in AI video generation tools.
Sora: The AI Video, Future Social Network?
Sora stands out due to its more “social” approach compared to simple text assistants: the app empowers users to create AI-generated videos, akin to a creative network. This positioning likely explains why, despite access restrictions, the app is rapidly climbing the charts. For reference:
- ChatGPT reached the 1st place in the US App Store by its second day,
- Grok climbed to 4th place,
- Gemini to 6th,
- Copilot only to 19th,
- and Claude to 78th.
In short, Sora confirms the public’s thirst for AI-generated video content. With such a strong start, and while the app isn’t even open to everyone, OpenAI has marked one of the most significant launches of the year.
