Windows 10: free extended security updates in Europe starting 2025
The end of support for Windows 10 is approaching rapidly. As of October 14, 2025, the operating system will no longer receive regular updates.
However, a major change has been announced for Europe: extended security updates (ESU) for Windows 10 will be offered free of charge and without conditions for consumers in the European Economic Area (EEA).
The end of an era for Windows 10:
- Official support ends: October 14, 2025
- End of ESU for individuals: October 13, 2026
- Companies can purchase up to an additional 3 years of critical updates
Windows 10: Why This Change in Europe?
Initially, Microsoft intended to require users to activate Windows Backup to gain access to one year of free security updates. This service requires a Microsoft account and utilizes OneDrive to back up documents and settings.
The issue: beyond the 5 GB of free storage, users risk needing to purchase additional space.
Under pressure from the consumer advocacy group Euroconsumers, Microsoft was forced to revise its approach in Europe. “We are pleased to hear that Microsoft will provide a free option for extended security updates (ESU) for consumers in the EEA,” Euroconsumers wrote in an official letter.
A Decision Limited to Europe
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Windows Central that the company is “adapting the enrollment process to meet local expectations and provide a secure, simplified experience.”
Important notes:
- In Europe (EEA) → free ESU, no requirement for Windows Backup.
- Elsewhere → activation of Windows Backup required, or a payment of $30 per year, or use of 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
Concerns for the Future
ESU for individuals will end in October 2026, leaving consumers with only a year of respite. Euroconsumers continues to urge Microsoft to extend the duration of free updates to prevent millions of computers from being exposed to security risks.
In summary:
- Windows 10 will lose regular support as of October 14, 2025.
- In Europe, users will benefit from free ESU without conditions until 2026.
- Elsewhere, activation of Windows Backup, payment, or Microsoft Rewards will be necessary.
- Companies will have the option to purchase up to an additional 3 years of support.
