Facebook Dating introduces AI with “Dating Assistant” and “Meet Cute”

Facebook Dating Adds AI with ‘Dating Assistant’ and ‘Meet Cute’

Meta aims to redefine online dating and eliminate “swipe fatigue.” To achieve this, Facebook Dating is rolling out two new AI-driven features: Dating Assistant and Meet Cute.

The goal is to offer more personalized experiences and lessen the tediousness of endless scrolling.

Dating Assistant: An AI That Searches for You

The first new feature is called Dating Assistant. Unlike traditional filters (like height, education, etc.), this AI allows you to directly input a personalized request to find a suitable match.

For instance, typing “Find me a Parisian in the tech sector” will generate a corresponding profile. The assistant can also:

  • Improve your existing profile,
  • Suggest date ideas,
  • Or broaden your search criteria.

Available under the “Matches” tab, this feature is currently being rolled out in the United States and Canada.

Meet Cute: A Weekly Surprise

The second feature, called Meet Cute, focuses on spontaneity. Each week, Facebook offers you a surprise match. You can choose to start a conversation… or skip it.

02 Meet Cute

Meta describes this feature as ideal for those tired of swiping and seeking to broaden their dating horizons without spending hours filtering. Soon, it will even be possible to customize the frequency of these suggestions.

Facebook Dating: A Strategic Shift Against Tinder and Others

With these additions, Meta is directly responding to competitors like Tinder, which has recently integrated its own AI functionalities for matchmaking.

It’s hard not to think of the “Hang the DJ” episode from the series Black Mirror, where an algorithm manages dating to find the ideal partner. While Facebook isn’t quite there yet, the logic is similar: the algorithm makes choices for you.

By introducing Dating Assistant and Meet Cute, Facebook Dating aims for a smoother, more personalized, and significantly less time-consuming experience.

It remains to be seen whether these innovations will attract users already accustomed to Tinder, Bumble, or Hinge… or if they will raise concerns among those wary of an excessive algorithmic influence on their romantic lives.

Would you be willing to let an AI choose your future dates?
