SAO PAULO — Global telecommunications provider Level 3 Communications, Inc., increased capacity on its fiber-optic network in Southern Brazil, from Porto Alegre (RS) to Curitiba (PR), providing higher availability, lower latency and higher resiliency to the regional structure throughout Southern Brazil. The expansion provides customers with access to Level 3’s enhanced network capabilities and portfolio of data, security, video, voice and unified communications solutions to support today’s emerging technologies. Through this expansion, customers will benefit from cost-effective, alternative options to route traffic and connect between the south of Brazil and other business centers around the globe.

Key Facts:

  • The network expansion will help customers respond to the growing demand for larger Internet capacity for voice, video and data to meet end-user expectations.
  • Level 3’s global IP backbone capacity is more than 42 Terabits per second (Tbps).
  • According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, Global IP traffic has increased more than fivefold in the past 5 years, and will increase nearly threefold over the next 5 years. IP traffic in Latin America will reach 12.9 exabytes per month by 2019.

The additional 250 Gbps of capacity between Porto Alegre and Curitiba enables lower latency and increased redundancy and route diversity for the region.
Several cities will benefit from this improvement including Lajeado, Bento Gonçalves and Vacaria in Rio Grande do Sul, as well as the regions of Lages in Santa Catarina and Mafra in Paraná.
