Web Host NewsLONDON, UK – OnApp has announced that its federated CDN platform for service providers, OnApp CDN, has grown to 60 global locations in just six months and is now more than twice the size of Amazon CloudFront. OnApp CDN was launched to existing OnApp customers in Q4 2011. It is now available to providers around the world, who can get started at

OnApp CDN enables any service provider to build an instant global CDN without investing millions in their own global infrastructure, or having to resell traditional third party CDNs at wafer-thin margins. It achieves this by connecting cloud providers in a federated global marketplace, where each provider can buy and sell CDN bandwidth on demand. The marketplace allows service providers to sell their spare capacity and expand their cloud services instantly through CDN PoPs (Points of Presence) across the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific.

OnApp CDN is the first in a series of federated cloud applications planned by OnApp, which has deployed more than 800 clouds for 300+ providers in the last two years. is one of the latest CDN providers powered by OnApp’s federated platform. Launched by Cloudee, a global cloud service provider, has taken advantage of OnApp’s low-cost, federated model to launch a global CDN service with 45+ PoPs and a free 30GB trial.

“OnApp’s federated CDN model keeps costs low for us, because we can use OnApp’s CDN marketplace to expand instantly into places we don’t have our own infrastructure,” said Zdenek Cendra, CEO of Cloudee. “That means we can keep costs low for our customers, while still giving them access to a high-quality network of PoPs. And, at the same time, we can use the marketplace to sell spare capacity in our own datacenters, so we can maximize revenue from our own infrastructure investments. We’ve had very strong early take-up, including companies like Geewa, a top Facebook game developer, which is switching to our CDN service from Amazon CloudFront.”

“The federated model is the only real way that service providers can compete with cloud companies like Amazon,” said Ditlev Bredahl, CEO of OnApp. “Even a large provider stands little chance against their scale and resources. Together, however, the world’s service provider community can offer more scale, better platform support, better application support and more flexible pricing. OnApp CDN is the first example of this model in action. Our federated CDN delivers greater profitability for service providers than traditional content delivery networks, as well as greater reach and lower costs for end users.”

OnApp announced the news at WHD 2012 in Germany, the world’s largest event for hosting and Internet service providers. Also at the show, OnApp announced availability of a new free version of its cloud platform, OnApp Cloud, and the first public beta version of OnApp Storage, a new distributed storage platform for service providers and enterprises.
