Award-Winning IT Host Entrepreneur, Kate Craig-Wood Offers Some Tips to Hosting Businesses to Help Survive the Economic Downturn

Web Hosting NewsGuildford, Surrey, UK – Kate-Craig-Wood, MD of Memset and recent winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Guildford Life With Style 2008/9 Awards says the key to her success, especially in these gloomy economic times has been to keep a close eye on business opportunities and reposition her business quickly to take advantage of them.

Her business, Memset is an award-winning IT hosting company based in Guildford, which is currently sustaining over 50% per year growth with 15-25% profitability, despite the recent economic downturn, and was recently recognised as one of the Deloitte UK Technology Fast 50 for its 832% growth in the last 5 years.

Kate believes all businesses should be looking to address their product and service offerings to see if there is anyway they can capitalise during the credit crunch. For example, Kate realised that the combination of the credit crunch together with increased environmental awareness and the relentless increase in demand for computing resource was likely to force CIO and CTO’s to start to look at outsourcing their IT infrastructure. Therefore, she repositioned Memset’s marketing and services to appeal to that audience. Its thanks primarily to this strategy that Memset is still experiencing growth.

Now is a good time for smaller hosting businesses to do the same. There will be increasing opportunity for smaller and more efficient businesses to win large clients as they look to the SME sector for cost savings and outsourcing.

Kate also believes that businesses should remain focused on reducing their carbon footprint during this time, as there is a direct relationship between reducing waste and increasing profit. Memset became the UK’s first CarbonNeutral ISP in August 2006. Offsetting the business’ carbon footprint has not only resulted in improved energy efficiency and reduced costs, but being a “green host” has become an important selling point for us.

Commenting on being recognised as Entrepreneur of the Year at the Guildford Life With Style Awards, Kate said: “I’m delighted to have won this local award and hope that my success inspires other businesses to stay focussed and look at other ways they can survive these tough economic times.”
